
Our world makes the most sense when we don’t push against nature. The fact that as a race we do, explains why the world at large is in the state that it is.
I didn’t wake up this morning look outside and think to myself, “It’s a good day for watermelon…” whilst looking at the fresh fallen snow.
My mind went to hot tea and something cozy for lunch like soup. Why do we resist what wants to take place this time of year? Rest.
The body needs rest! But we’re stuffed into the hamster wheel of the American grind. How did we get here? We must have agreed to it along the way. Nothing happens without our permissive thoughts, conscious or subconscious.
I look outdoors often, it’s my connection to what I’m meant to be doing at the time. The little woodland animals aren’t out, nor the birds. Everyone is huddled within their homes probably napping.
Life is filled with seasons, just like nature. We begin as babes full of energy, needing guidance and shelter— much like a small sapling or other little green shoot. Growing and ever reaching toward the sun. Gosh, that’s the sorry thing about the north, less sun in the wintertime. Yet another reminder to rest and travel inward.
Don’t you think childhood is much like springtime? Youthful, new and full of vigor. Summertime is fruiting season, bearing little ones and raising them. The prime of your life. Autumn working, entering retirement, watching the children grow, and begin families of their own. And finally, winter… the craziness of life has receded, life has become slower, more intentional. Life feels more measured than it used to, there is a deep appreciation for the sunshine/the good days.
We have these micro seasons within the larger picture of our lives, and we’ve done a fine job of ignoring them. We’re so busy blazing through life that we don’t sit with these seasons and enjoy them for what they are. We’ve got these awesome vehicles we call our body, but we don’t honor it, then get angry when it breaks down.
We came from nature, we live in these earthen vessels that we refer to as ourselves, these are just borrowed bodies. But they need to follow the seasons, the need of the nourishment and rest of the different seasons. Our bodies also need the times that are filled with newness and vigor. To walk around in these beautiful bodies we are also responsible for the care of them.
Think of the seasons if you’re even not sure how you should be handling your body or even what you should or shouldn’t be eating. I know it gets confusing because I could get a watermelon in December if I wanted one.
It may not be snowing where you live but there is a calmness, an air of rest that falls over everything, even in the south. If you’re native to where you presently live, you know what that looks like, follow its cues. Watch what the animals are doing. Watch the skies and how they change or where the sun lands on the trees in the morning. Note those changes. All of these things bring you closer to nature and more present with your life. And the other thing… they slow down the speed with which life feels like it is blowing past you. It brings you here and into the now. It removes you from your ‘to do’ list and places you right there with whatever aspect of nature you are paying attention to. And that my friend is a beautiful thing!
